Infertility is the failure of a couple to achieve conception within 12 months of adequate unprotected sexual intercourse

About one third of cases of infertility result from pathologic factors in men, one third from factors in both men and women and one third from female factors.
Primary infertility is said to occur when a couple has never achieved pregnancy despite at least one year of uninterrupted and adequate unprotected sexual intercourse.
Secondary infertility implies that there has been a previous pregnancy
FEMALE FACTORS
Failure of ovulation – Polycystic ovarian syndrome, Hyperprolactinaemia(basically means an overproduction of the hormone prolactin)
Pelvic factors – Tubal disease, pelvic adhesions, uterine fibroids, Endometriosis
Cervical factors
 RISK FACTORS IN WOMEN
Age, Stress, Poor diet, Obesity, STDs, Health problems etc.
MALE FACTORS
Problem with sperm production e.g. Azoospermia(complete absence of living sperms in the semen; or a condition of a man whose semen contains no sperm), Oligospermia(refer to semen with a low concentration of sperm and is a common finding in male infertility) etc.
Problem of sperm delivery, e.g. Poor erection, lack of libido, retrograde ejaculation, premature ejaculation, impotence, etc.
Penile and testicular abnormalities.
RISK FACTORS IN MALES
Alcohol, drugs, health problems, obesity, smoking, old age, STDs etc.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF INFERTILITY

Inability to achieve pregnancy, absence of secondary sexual characteristics, testicular abnormalities e.g. varicoceles(an abnormal enlargement in the scrotum), galactorrhoea(excessive flow of breast milk or spontaneous milk production at times other than after pregnancy, it can occur in both men and women), abdominal masses, gynaecomastia(strictly male disease and is any growth of the fatty and glandular tissue in a male breast), symptoms suggestive of STI, UTI, mumps, genital, pelvic or inguinoscrotal(relating to the groin and the scrotum) and injuries.
