It is the commonest benign neoplasm in females. They appear round, white, well circumscribed and solid.
The presence of fibroids does not necessarily mean that they need to be treated. Treatment is necessary when there is discomfort or imminent danger.
It is not every woman that must have fibroid. Much sexual intercourse or lack of it has nothing to do with fibroid and its control.
It is found in about 50% of black women of reproductive age. It is common during the reproductive years and shrinks dramatically in size after a woman passes through menopause.
CLASSIFICATION OF FIBROIDS
It could be single or multiple and are named according to where they are found.
INTRAMURAL FIBROIDS – Are fibroids found in the wall of the uterus or womb. They are the commonest.
SUB-SEROUS FIBROID – Are fibroids that grow outside the wall of the uterus and can become very large. They can also grow in stalks and are termed PEDUNCULATED FIBROIDS
SUBMUCOSAL FIBROIDS – Are fibroids that are found in the muscle beneath the inner lining of the uterus. This type often causes bleeding and interferes with pregnancy.
CERVICAL FIBROIDS – Are found in the wall of the cervix (neck of the womb)
HOW THEY GROW
Most fibroids start in an intramural location. As they grow, some may develop towards the outside of the uterus (subserous) while some develop towards the cavity (submucosal)
Fibroids may grow rapidly during pregnancy due to increased oestrogen levels but are known to shrink following menopause as the levels of oestrogen decreases.

Fibroids varies in size from microscopic to lesions of considerable size. Depending on the size, the client may be able to feel it through the abdominal wall as a solid mass in the pelvis.
CAUSES OF FIBROIDS
The main cause of fibroids is not known but it has been attributed to:
– Activities of some free radicals which results from the food we eat especially imported food, which are foreign to our body system. These foods are mostly fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, etc from organic sources.
– Some packaged foods contain preservatives, artificial colorings , flavorings and other additives.
– Also some commercial farmers add synthetic hormones and drugs to the feed given to the livestock, so they can grow fast and gain weight and be sold for high price.
– Commercial produce are typically sprayed several times in its lifecycle with chemicals, herbicides and pesticides in order to protect the crops from disease and being eaten by insects.
– Oestrogen hormone which is an important female reproductive hormone is known to cause fibroids to grow. That is why fibroid is common during the female reproductive years.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF FIBROIDS
It depends on the size, number and location of the fibroid.
– Lower abdominal mass
– Abdominal discomfort
– Uterine bleeding
– Painful menstruation
– Prolonged menstruation
– Heavy menstruation
– Abdominal bloating
– Urinary frequency
– Pain during intercourse
– Bleeding in pregnancy
– Infertility or miscarriages

– Easy fatigability
– Client may be pale due to anemia, etc.
However, when small, they may be asymptomatic (have no symptoms)
Is better established by a medical practitioner after an ultrasound scan. The scan will determine the location, number and size of the fibroid.
There are other improved and advanced diagnostic procedures, especially to determine whether the fibroid is interfering with fertility.
Problems associated with fibroids are often the reason for treatment; otherwise, the presence of fibroid does not mean that they must be treated.
MEDICAL INTERVENTION : Medical experts often use contraceptive pills to manage symptoms of fibroids. Drugs are also used to induce menopause-like situation. High density ultrasound waves can also be used to destroy the tissues.
UTERINE ARTERY EMBOLISATION: A procedure used to cut off blood supply to the fibroids can also be used in management of symptoms.
SURGERY: Is the most popular intervention for fibroids. It involves surgical removal of the fibroid itself or the entire uterus or womb along with the fibroids as the case may be. Surgical removal of fibroids may not prevent the reoccurrence, but surgery remains the quickest way to get rid of fibroids.
FIBROID AND CANCER
There is no consensus that fibroids develop to cancer. However, rapid growth of fibroid or growth after menopause needs medical investigations.
