Menstruation is a normal part of a woman’s reproductive cycle. It occurs about every 28 days unless there is pregnancy or menopause.

The pain or flow of menses varies in individuals. An individual may not have the same experience with menses every month as hormones and environmental factors play important roles.
There are varies categories of menstrual irregularities. These include dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea and menorrhagia.
DYSMENORRHOEA OR PAINFUL MENSTRUATION
Refers to cyclical abdominal pain associated with menstruation. The pain is thought to result from uterine contractions.
It may be primary or secondary indicating the absence or presence, respectively of an identifiable underlying cause.
The pain may be mild or severe.
CAUSES OF DYSMENORRHOEA
Mostly caused by hormonal changes
Chronic pelvic infections e.g. Chlamydial infections
UTERINE FIBROIDS
Endometriosis
SYMPTOMS
Lower abdominal pain that is cramping or colicky in nature but may be dull and constant
Pain may radiate to the lower back or legs
Nausea, vomiting, headache and dizziness may sometimes be associated with the pain.
AMENORRHOEA OR LACK OF MENSTRUATION
Lack of menses in a lady who has not yet started menstruating is called Primary Amenorrhea
Lack of menstruation in a previously menstruating lady is said to be Secondary Amenorrhea.
